Live Report: Fantastic Negrito | 22.07.25 | Λόφος Φιλοπάππου
Fantastic Negrito managed to get us moving to his rhythm, on a wonderful night at Θέατρο Δόρα Στράτου on Λόφος Φιλοπάππου.

On a seemingly quiet evening (Tuesday 22.07.25), Fantastic Negrito and his powerhouse band managed to lay down the groove, performing tracks from their latest record (Son Of A Broken Man). All of it at Θέατρο Δόρα Στράτου on Λόφος Φιλοπάππου, an ideal spot for a show that got us moving to the beat.

An alternative concert venue
Heading up to the Hill, and knowing I was going to a seated show, I wondered how Negrito would manage to carry the crowd along. Then again, that was one of the things he pointed out himself… 'This is a new experience for us.', he kept saying, adding that they're used to a vibe where the stage and the audience are right up close. Joking that it was like we were all in his living room, Negrito went on doing what he always does. Dancing!
With the music and the sound being excellent, every detail of their playing reached our ears. Tight sound, superb ideas, music that carries plenty of elements from many parts of America.

A distinctive blend of elements and influences
Fantastic Negrito draws on many different sources. In his music and his stage presence, the first thing you notice is the influence of New Orleans and the South. With songs that have that voodoo effect, he moves between a world of fantasy and superstition and reality itself. And speaking of reality, the political and social dimension is very much on his mind, holding a prominent place in his music.
All of this was evident, not only in the songs they performed and wrote themselves, but also in certain covers they chose to present (e.g. Where did you Sleep Last Night). Every song, every melody, every musical element coming out of the band had its own artistic touch!

A groove nobody could resist
Fantastic Negrito's aim was to bring the groove to our evening. And that's exactly what he did! With the man himself dancing on stage, the aura the whole band gave off made it hard to stay put in your seat. Helping the cause even further were renditions of well-known funk tracks, which got the crowd dancing. Maybe the venue and the stage didn't help much, since outfits like this one want something that brings the audience closer to them, but on the other hand, not as distant as a huge, elevated stage.
And speaking of dancing, from a certain point onwards you could see people dancing all around the space by the stage. Flushed, with happy, smiling faces, regardless of age, everyone was moving to the rhythm of the music! Even those who didn't head down to the stage to dance were moving. Fantastic Negrito had achieved his goal…

In conclusion
With this being the second time we've caught him (the first was at Τεχνόπολη a few years back), we can say with confidence that Negrito is an artist who bridges swamp blues and funk brilliantly. Sometimes leaning on rhythm, sometimes on plain, punchy, spooky dark riffs, and sometimes on gentle melodies backing his love songs. All of it delivered with his one-of-a-kind performance and that astonishing voice! We can't wait for the next time we meet him on another wonderful night under a starry sky!
