The first steps
The Apolia were formed in 2008 in Athens, having also released three more albums ("Apolia – part one” in 2011, “Apolia – part b ́” in 2012 and “Διά πυρός εστί” in 2016) with their influences coming mainly from abroad, from the late 80’s right up to today. In June 2021 the album «Κόρα» was released by Spider Music (Facebook), which is out digitally and in all record stores and you should definitely give it a listen!
On the music
In this new album “Κόρα” we find nine songs with lyrics by Αλέξανδρου Αντωνάτου, who remains a constant amid the band's ever-shifting lineup. Through Greek rock tracks, the band comes to sweep you into its world and stir up feelings you don't come across so often anymore on the Greek rock scene. In fact, you'd have to go way back to have experienced them, and now they pique your interest not just because they conjure feelings of forgetting, but also feelings of anticipation for what you're holding in your hands.
More specifically, the Greek rock that Apolia put out through the album "Κόρα", comes to stand right alongside the Greek rock we used to hear from the heavyweights of the old days. Yes, Apolia have managed to create something so lovable that the old-timers will surely adore it, but the young ones will love it too. And especially if someone has a soft spot for pure Greek
rock then they'll come and shake their hand, because Apolia have got it both on the musical side, which moves in familiar scene territory, and on the lyrical side, which is where most bands trip up on songs like these.
From a lyrical standpoint
And on this front comes Αλέξανδρος Αντωνάτος, who lays down his important lyrical brick on this album, creating a respectable body of lyrics that expresses 100% the vibe the band wants to capture, while at the same time
they stir up thoughts and questions in the listener's mind about everything that unfolds within the lyrics. Apolia with Αλέξανδρο Αντωνάτο, have managed to build what we call true 100% Greek rock, without any posturing and
over-straining for styles and sounds. They're simply themselves as a band, and their character earns the listener's respect, who's left thoroughly satisfied!
In conclusion
The new album by Apolia , coming out through Spider Music and going by the name "Κόρα" has truly managed something that other similar bands haven't. To breathe new life into a musical world that had been buried for years in the country's musical firmament. Give them a listen and you'll remember me!
