The Plini sound: Discovering a new sound in composition
"When composing I experiment with new sounds and try to push the boundaries of music.", says the Australian guitarist describing the famous 'The Plini sound'. "When I start composing a new track, new sounds always sound really ugly to me!".

And with that statement Plini showed us that some of his ideas started from a different foundation. So what exactly is 'The Plini sound'?
In conversation with Plini, he described to us his approach to composing a song. Plini's music is woven together in an intricate way, creating a sound that defies genre. A beautiful guitar sound, perhaps?
In an interview the guitarist gave to Guitar.com, he said:
"The first time an idea comes to me, it can sound awful. It's like staring into an abyss and seeing a bit of light, and you just chase the light. You hope that when you get there it'll be good."
"That's how a song appears to me. There's no great magic or complexity to where it starts. It could be an E Major chord. Then everything else piles different things onto the original idea."
"That's when I reach the point where I need to listen to it a few times to figure out what's going on."
The interview also touched on – among other things – the development of Plini's new signature guitar with .strandberg.
Impulse Voices
Orchestral music is a very niche art form. Prog rock / metal is arguably just as niche a form of musical expression. So instrumental prog sits at the far edge of the music subsystem, as far as you can get before crossing into truly weird and experimental territory. Impulse Voices will give you exactly that kind of experience as the artist's newest record.
Through an interview he gave us we broke down this record, going into detail on the thinking and inspirations behind the making of this most eclectic and thrilling collection of progressive instrumental tracks.
For Plini, composition is his primary means of expression.
