A new music-theatre adaptation of Pierre de Marivaux's comedy “La Dispute” runs through the 2026–2027 season at 41 Street Café in Ymittos, moving the action into the future, where human nature is placed under observation.
About the production
In a world of virtual reality, a scientist arranges a peculiar social experiment: four young people, two boys and two girls, are raised in isolation from any social influence and brought together for the first time, to answer an enduring question — who is responsible for infidelity, the man or the woman?
Love, friendship, desire, rivalry and power are redefined through a humorous game of observation and misunderstanding, full of reversals, where the line between the natural and the manufactured grows steadily blurrier.
Director’s note
In this adaptation the principal roles are condensed into one central figure, the administrator, presented as a paternal presence responsible for raising the children — but functioning in truth as an agent of power and control. The choice foregrounds the dynamics of authority over a group while keeping the comedy intact.
Marivaux, writing well ahead of his time, approaches female desire and emotional freedom with boldness.
